The desalination industry in Latin America is experiencing a promising surge, fuelled by increasing water scarcity and innovative technological advancements. Countries like Chile, Brazil, Peru and Mexico are heavily investing in desalination projects, recognizing the urgent need for sustainable water sources. With over 25 projects underway this growth is vital for sectors like mining, which anticipates a 66% increase in water consumption by 2025. Chile currently operates 22 desalination plants with a capacity of 6,472 lt per second and has six more under construction, along with 15 projects more in evaluation and planning. These developments reflect a strong commitment to diversifying water sources and enhancing water security.

Recent advancements emphasize the integration of renewable energy, such as solar and wind, to power desalination plants, thereby improving sustainability. Additionally, advanced membrane technologies and efficient processes are being adopted to reduce costs and environmental impact. The estimated investment of over $18 billion in ongoing desalination projects underscores Chile's dedication to modernizing its water infrastructure. Peru's announcement of plans for six new desalination plants further highlights regional interest in this technology to expand access to potable water.
